Bestseller Reichs’s excellent 19th Temperance Brennan novel (after 2015’s Speaking in Bones) finds the forensic anthropologist at her breaking point after a series of traumatic events, including the murder of her boss, who was succeeded by a woman who regards Brennan as persona non grata; her mother’s cancer diagnosis; and the discovery that Brennan herself has a potentially fatal aneurysm. She begins to doubt her own senses when she thinks she spots a man in a trench coat lurking outside her Charlotte, N.C., home in the middle of the night, but fears that it might have just been a hallucination. She’s then rattled to receive grisly images on her phone of an eviscerated male corpse without a face. Hooked by the mystery of who sent the pictures and why, Brennan risks her professional standing by pursuing the matter, despite the opposition of Charlotte’s new medical examiner. The trail takes multiple unexpected turns as Brennan pursues leads connected to bioweapons, a ferry sinking, and the Dark Web, in this crackerjack puzzle. CSI junkies who haven’t read Reichs before will be hooked. (Mar.)

A Conspiracy of Bones by Kathy Reichs is a highly recommended 19th novel in the series featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance (Tempe) Brennan. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Tempe is recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm when she receives a series of texts, each containing a picture of a faceless, hand-less corpse. Her interest is immediately piqued. She doesn't know who the sender is, but she wants to discovery the identity of the man and why the pictures were sent to her. A corpse turns up, but Tempe's new boss, Medical Examiner Margot Heavner, doesn't like her and has not called her in to assist. Tempe manages to collect clues from the corpse and moves forward with her clandestine investigation, with help from ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell. As Tempe uses all her skills to try and uncover the twisted trails leading to the truth, she uncovers the name of the dead man. That leads to even more follows trails that include crimes against children, a spiritual retreat, and into a site on the dark web. She is also questioning herself because she experiences migraines, nightmares, and thinks she might be hallucinating. Fans of the long running series will be pleased to see Tempe's return, but especially to see Reichs back writing the series. The focus of this installment is more about Tempe's ability to still puzzle through clues and solve a case, while recovering and overcoming health concerns. While I haven't read all the novels in the series, this was a well-written investigative novel and Tempe is a fascinating character. Her health is a concern, but she still is compelled to investigate. The development of Tempe's character moves forward and evolves, as she is the main focus of the novel. She does interact with other known characters from the series. While you could read this as a stand-alone novel, it might be more beneficial to read some of the earlier novels in order to establish more background information about the characters and the series. serial-killer, series, forensics, suspense, thriller I think that everyone is somewhat familiar with Dr Temperance Brennan after over 20 years of books and the spinoff TV series of a number of years. Obviously I've missed a few of the books, because the murder of her boss and the stenting of a cerebral aneurysm in her own brain were total news to me! About reviewing the book. Hard for me to do because it has a lot about serial killer and child abduction/torture/murder. The story is well written and always has a spate of snarkiness just when the awfulness is getting to me. Lots of interesting learning opportunities as well: the darkweb/tor, conspiracy obsessives, and changes in DNA recovery. The secondary thread is the unwise behaviors and animosity from the new boss as well as backstory regarding Temperance's mother and some other characters from earlier books. Bottom line is that the material is something that I find distressing but the writing remains on target. I requested and received a free ebook copy from Scribner via NetGalley. Thank you!

This is the 19th Temperance Brennan book in the series, and while I haven't read every single one, I've read a great many. This one is really good. Tempe Brennan is recovering from Neurosurgery and fighting headaches and possible hallucinations. The new Chief Medical Examiner is very self-promoting and doesn't like Temperance, so she isn't consulting with her as the old Chief did before he died. In fact, she doesn't want her help or advice at all. A faceless man shows up at the morgue and Tempe received some photos by a mysterious text. The identity of the corpse is unknown and Tempe's curiosity is piqued, but she has to find roundabout ways to get information about the body and what the autopsy shows. Tempe enlists help from Erskine 'Skinny' Slidell as well as from her boyfriend in Montreal, Andrew Ryan. Then there's a link to a 10-year-old cold case involving a child. Lots of investigating to do and Tempe's in the thick of it. I enjoy reading this series and I also enjoyed the television series 'Bones' that was based on Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan books. The characters are memorable and the investigations are always interesting. I hope to see even more books in this series in the future. Thanks to Kathy Reichs and Scribner through Netgalley for an advance copy of this book!
